The Craftwork:
Utilizing a method of slab/wheet handcrafting, this functional stoneware is mady by Christian Royal.  The potttery, delightfully irregular, frequently incorporated decorative impressions and shapes from flowers and leaves.  Certain distinctive glazes, fired at high temperature, produe hues on the ceramic surfaces that are reflective of the colors of the Lowcountry marshes and vistas.

The Potter:   Christian Royal is an 18 year old potter-in-training who has Down syndrome.  Christian began handbuilding pottery in the autumn of 2006.  He struggles with single words and has yet to grasp basic addition.  But, over the past four years, he has shown an interest in, and aptitude for, pottery.  Both his design and decorative skills are being developed, while maintaining the intent of simple, yet desirable pieces.  His pieces tell a Lowcountry story.  The demand for his work is growing and his pottery is carried in many Charleston galleries and shops.
