Welcom to the Windermere Community Garden
What started as a beautification project has become one of the most beautiful community gardens in the Lowcountry!  Both Phase I and Phase II were completed over the course of only two weekends -  November of 2007 and June of 2008 - when nearly 50 dedicated CHS volunteers and supporters gathered to create a high impact, low water requirement perennial, grass and shrub elements to the ever-popular South Windermere Shopping Center main boulevard median beds.

This collaborative and successful partnership between the Charleston Horticultural Society (CHS), the Charleston Parks Conservancy (CPC) and the City of Charleston, accomplished the lasting objective of providing Windermere Boulevard and the community at large with a colorful, long blooming alternative to this highly visible space.

This public greening enhancement project has won the acclaim of local neighbors, shopping center merchants and hundreds of customers and employees who frequent the center on a daily basis.
By partnering with like-minded organizations, CHS has developed a core of volunteers and supporters who perform the required preparation, planting, maintenance and resources required.

How was this done exactly?
Project volunteers began both Phase I and II by removing existing plants from the bed spaces along Windermere Blvd. that were returned to the City of Charleston Parks Department and recycled  for use elsewhere in the City.   Next, the soil was tested and amended with mushroom compost from All Seasons Mulch Market and with the help of  O'Dell Landscaping.  Once those beds were properly prepared, volunteers installed high impact, low water requirement perennial, grass and shrub elements to the remaining public green spaces and median planters.  Under the expertise and guidance of  Jim Martin, public horticulturist and executive Director of the Charleston Parks Conservancy, along with Paul Wentz, horticulturist and program manager for the CPC, volunteers learn lessons in this amazing outdoor classroom!
